2009 - 2010 SAN DIEGO CHARGERS SEASON

For all you who have waited all summer for the 2009 - 2010 football season to start, your time has come. The San Diego Chargers played their first home preseason game on August 15th and will return to Qualcomm Stadium on September 4th to face the San Francisco 49ers.

The Chargers’ prospects for a great season are apparent, as the defense works to improve under coordinator Ron Rivera. This year it’s all about defense. “We’ve got a great offense,” said cornerback Quentin Jammer, “We know on defense we have to hold up our end of the bargain.” And if the Chargers’ offense can play at the same level as last year, the team will be great. Last year the offense was one of only three in the league to average more than six yards per play. Unfortunately as great as the offense was, it did not control the ball, scoring quickly and leaving the defense to do most of the work.

Yes, football is back and it should be an exciting year as the Chargers’ celebrate 50th years of play. Sundays and football have become an American tradition to be shared with family and friends. LIZA MINNELLI at the HOLLYWOOD BOWL

The fabulous Liza Minnelli, an icon of stage and screen, queen of cabaret and winner of virtually every major award including an Oscar, three Tonys, two Golden Globes, a Grammy, and an Emmy – and recent inductee into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame – makes her triumphant return after her sold-out Broadway show. An unstoppable force, she commands the stage with irrepressible musical style and showbiz star power. Her immense talent as a singer, dancer and actress has been lauded over the years but she always seems the most confident on the stage; first performing in 1964 with her mother, Judy Garland at the London Palladium.

Tickets are still available for the performances next Friday, August 28 and Saturday, August 29. It will be a truly magical evening as Ms. Minnelli performs classics from her long, distinguished career. For twenty years the Taste of Newport has celebrated great food, wine and other tasty concoctions in Newport Beach. This year's offering is spectacular with over 35 restaurants and 15 wineries participating. "Nowhere else can you find an event that has the culinary and entertainment offerings like the Taste of Newport," commented Jeff Parker, Vice President for the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce (the event organizer). "With outstanding restaurants, the great backdrop of Newport Beach and world-class live entertainment, we have something for everyone."

Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the event. Hours are as follows: Friday from 6:00pm to 11:00pm; Saturday from 4:00pm to 11:00pm; and Sunday from noon to 8:00pm. Parking is available in some of the surrounding office building parking structures however nothing is allowed at Fashion Island.

I highly recommend attending this event. The food and wine offerings are wonderful and the chefs and sommeliers are gracious, ready to share great information about their recipes and offerings. But be forewarned that it is easy to drink a little too much. As in years past Classique Limousines will be providing several transportation packages for the event - ensuring everyone has an enjoyable time and a safe return home.
