Weather + Free:  Stop trying to decipher the weather forecast on the evening news in a language completely foreign to you!  With its simple interface, it will tell you the local time, temperature, humidity, visibility and other key factors to let you know if you need to grab your jacket before leaving the hotel.

 

Goby:  Wonder where everyone is?  Goby has the answer.  This app pinpoints the neighborhood hot spots, including museums, hotels, restaurants, concerts, plays and more locations right around the corner.

 

OANDA Currency Converter:  If you are traveling internationally, converting currency in your head can be difficult.  This app stands out from the other converters with its sleek styling and quick ability to factor the typical ATM rate (2%) or credit card rate (3%) into the conversion.

 

GateGuru:  This app allows you to access information on more than 120 airports (including some in Europe and Asia).  You can search for airport services and amenities such as restaurants, gift shops and bars (always needed on a long layover!).  It also includes reviews by fellow travelers and can be linked to other apps such as Kayak, TripIt, Facebook and Twitter.

Today I received my HOLLYWOOD BOWL 2012 mailer. On the front, it says, “There’s A Story In Every Seat.” So true! For anyone who has been to the Bowl will tell you it’s a perfect, summer evening.

I unfold the flyer and my eyes quickly scan the calendar. I start planning: Glenn Campbell’s Farewell Tour with Jackson Browne; Beethoven’s Ninth (always a treat); Reggae Night; Diana Krall. Then, I look closer – B.B. King on September 5th. My mind wanders . . . a warm, starlit night, wonderful friends, a great picnic basket, a lovely bottle of wine and the incomparable B.B. King. This is why we live in California and why there is nothing like an evening at the Bowl!

One of the great things about the Bowl is you can bring your picnic dinner and wine without the restrictions of other venues that require you to purchase from them. But if you do want to forego bringing the prep, they have some great options. The ROOFTOP GRILL is a full-service restaurant, offering a full menu. I have yet to go (I’m more the “bring my basket and wine person”) but I have heard great reviews from our clients. Rolling for Wishes, hosted by Karla Kjellin-Elder and Jeff Elder of Orange, started five years ago and is an amazing fundraiser. The Elders’ sponsorship raises awareness and funds for Make-A-Wish of Orange County and the Inland Empire with 100% of the proceeds going to the charity.

The first event was held in a gymnasium and the support was overwhelming. With each year, attendance and the dollars raised have grown exponentially. The themed events have included Mardi Gras and Mexico. This year’s event will be held at the magnificent Santiago Canyon Estate. The opulent surroundings and gorgeous views of the canyon will provide a rich backdrop for the Casablanca-themed evening. The Rolling for Wishes V Casino Night will be held Saturday, March 3rd, 2012 at 6:00PM. The incredible setting and canyon views will provide the backdrop for a black-white-silver Casablanca theme. The entertainment includes a lively casino, silent and live auction, raffle games plus tasty Mediterranean food, beer, wine and a martini bar.

Summer in Southern California . . . we all know what that means – street/highway construction.  Today, I drove to an appointment by St. Joseph’s in Orange and encountered a major delay due to the widening of Main Street.  But this weekend, all our nightmares come true (if the press and government entities are to be believed) ----CARMEGEDDON.

Yes, in what seems lunacy to anyone who travels our local freeways, they are closing – and I do not mean one or two lines but the entire 405 Freeway over the Sepulveda Pass.  The closure is predicted to impact every freeway in the Los Angeles area as people seek alternate routes.  Current estimates predict 25 mile gridlock on every freeway with a minimum two hour delay in arriving at your destination.

But we live in Orange County so there is no need to head north into the CARMEGEDDON of L.A.  Following are a few suggestions:

The 102nd Annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade, hosted by the Commodores Club of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce, will celebrate the city's film heritage with the theme "Lights, Camera...Christmas in Newport Beach." As Newport Beach's Christmas Card to the world, the boat parade will set the harbor ablaze for five consecutive nights, beginning Wednesday, December 15 and ending Sunday, December 19, 2010. The parade starts at Bay Island at 6:30 pm and finishes at the same site at approximately 9:00 pm each evening.

Beautiful multi-million dollar yachts, kayaks, canoes and other small boats will light up the harbor as a dazzling array of holiday lights and music fill the air. Many of the boats will be richly decorated with animated Christmas scenes accompanied by music and costumed carolers. The Christmas floats will wind their way some 14 miles around the harbor to give viewers in restaurants, yacht clubs, on public beaches, and in private homes an incredible sight that has delighted millions of people for a century. CLASSIQUE LIMOUSINES ANNOUNCES TRIAL OF MERCEDES-BENZ R350

Classique Limousines, a leader in ground transportation in Southern California announces participation in testing the Mercedes-Benz R350 BlueTEC vehicle to replace the traditional Lincoln Town Car as the vehicle of choice for the livery industry.

Kevin Illingworth, owner of Classique Limousines recently met Mick Morris, Manager Fleet Operations Mercedes-Benz at the Atlantic City Limousine Digest Show.   Classique Limousines is a of environmental sustainability and Mr. Illingworth has discussed what can be done with our affiliate companies throughout the United States. Mr. Frank Gomez, National Account Manager Mercedes-Benz approached Mr. Illingworth and asked him to participate in the trial study of the vehicle. The goal of Mercedes-Benz is that the R350 BlueTEC will become the vehicle of choice in the livery industry to replace the traditional Lincoln Town Car that Ford is suspending production on as of 2011.

On November 17, 2010 Classique Limousines received delivery of the R350 which Mr. Illingworth is driving and testing for its viability as a livery vehicle. He was immediately impressed with the handling, roominess and luggage capacity. Another key point about the R350 is the size of the front windshield and minimal blind spots that has become an issue on newer model vehicles from other companies. Other impressive features are the ease of syncing cell phones to the vehicles Bluetooth system, allowing drivers to be more focused and not fumbling with headsets; additional “jump” seats making third row of seating available for as directed runs; GPS system that is easy to use with clear graphics; reverse camera when backing up, giving the driver needed visibility.

Mr. Illingworth is considering this vehicle when adding to his fleet. With the BlueTEC technology that converts polluting nitrogen oxide into harmless nitrogen and water is impressive; and the result is a significant reduction in pollutants, making the BlueTEC diesel engine smoother, more efficient and quieter yet also more robust. Mr. Illingworth believes the R350’s fuel efficiency is needed in our industry and will bring Classique Limousines one step closer to its goals of environmental sustainability and zero carbon emissions.

Blessed with gorgeous weather year-round, Temecula is home to nearly 40 wineries and a charming Old Town with unique dining and shopping experiences. Often overshadowed by the wonderful wineries, Temecula also offers artisan foods such as olive oil and cheeses.

BAILY VINEYARD AND WINERY

Their reds are smooth, supple and balanced. Highlights include their Cabernet Franc (packed with silky fruit with a touch of herbs), a full-bodied Merlot and a lovely Meritage.

MOUNT PALOMAR WINERY

Known for producing a varietal Cortese – a white wine grape from the Piedmont region of Italy – this wine is gorgeous, infused with the aromas of flowers and apples with a hint of nutty bitterness in the finish. They offer two stunning dessert wines: the Reserve Port and the Solera Cream Sherry.

WILSON CREEK WINERY & VINEYARDS

Certainly one of the “favorites” for most wine tours of the area, their signature wine is an Almond Champagne, fermented in almond oil. Other offerings to try are their dry Grenache Rose and a peppery, French-style Syrah.

FALKNER WINERY

The Pinnacle Restaurant at the winery offers sweeping views of the valley and great menu. Known for producing semi-sweet red wines, among the favorites is “Luscious Lips” (blend of Syrah and Sangiovese) and an exotic, honeysuckle scented Viognier.

CLASSIQUE LIMOUSINES: TRANSPORTATION TO PETER PAN AT ORANGE COUNTY PERFORMING ARTS

SEPTEMBER 28 – NOVEMBER 21, 2010

PETER PAN - J.M Barrie’s classic tale of a mischievous boy who can fly and magically refuses to grow up is currently being staged at the ORANGE COUNTY PERFORMING ARTS CENTER. The venue is an elaborate tent erected next to the CENTER which is suspended from a white metal exoskeleton that rises more than 100 feet, leaving the interior virtually pillar free. It provides a remarkable 360 degree experience that will delight children of all ages.

Veteran theater designer Bill Dudley, part of the THREE SIXTY ENTERTAINMENT LTD. team that created this production, describes it as follows: “What we have aimed for is a fusing of some very different theatre styles. This is still a theater production. We have live actors to tell the story and we also have puppetry of a charming and surreal style, aerobatics, singing and sword fighting. What we also have is this other very special element. We take the audience up in the air and give them the felling that they’re soaring through the sky with these very familiar characters. It’s a lovely feeling.”

Personally, I am excited to see this production. I have seen PETER PAN several times before in a traditional theater environment and it is always magic. However, this special staging will bring Barrie’s story alive, allowing each of us to “fly” with Peter. I definitely recommend attending.
